The Council of the European Union adopted on 8 May 2014 an updated regulation on the EU's fleet capacity policy, aiming to promote inland waterway transport. The updated regulation broadens the reserve funds called Inland Waterway funds, set up under Council regulation 718/1999 - which also established an EU fleet capacity policy for vessels used to transport goods on inland waterways in the member states. Those funds consist of financial contributions from the inland waterway transport industry. However, due to their restricted scope, these funds had never been used, something the updated directive hopes to change. This regulation is part of the NAIADES II programme presented in September 2013. |
