Information sources previewing and reporting on the European Parliament election 2014 in Greece. Kathimerini reported on the 3 May 2014 that thirteen days ahead of local elections and 20 days ahead of the European Parliament elections, coalition partners New Democracy (ND) and PASOK were seeking to galvanize their party base to secure results that would dampen leftist opposition SYRIZA’s calls for a snap national vote. ND welcomed two new opinion polls that gave the conservatives a narrow lead over SYRIZA ahead of the Europe-wide ballot. However, and for the first time in the political history of Greece, the leftist Syriza won the first position in the European Parliament election, beating the ruling Nea Demokratia Party (ND), and putting into question its political legitimacy. |
