Eurozone consumer optimism has plummeted in August 2011 at the fastest rate for 20 years, while manufacturing contracted for the first time in two years, according to surveys that indicated economic growth across the eurozone region would remain at near stagnation.

German business confidence tumbled in August 2011 as the country felt the impact of financial market turmoil and fears about the global growth outlook. The fall in the IFO Institute Business Climate Index was the biggest month-on-month plunge since 2008.
