Summary: Financial integration lies at the heart of the Single Market and the Economic and Monetary Union and brings important economic benefits for the euro area and the EU as a whole. After a set-back due to the financial crisis, financial integration in the European Union has been increasing again since 2011. EU investors have increased their cross-border asset holdings. Intra-EU debt and equity portfolio investments increased by EUR 2 trillion between 2006 and 2015. Price-based indicators of financial integration show that overall convergence nearly doubled over that period. Against this background, and as the EU economy continues to recover, it is important to build on this momentum and move forward with the necessary steps to deepen financial integration in the EU. |
