Summary: The European Commission launched on 7 June 2017 a European Defence Fund (EDF), which aims at helpng Member States spend money on defence and security more efficiently, reduce duplications in spending and get better value for money. Further information: The EDF would coordinate, supplement and amplify national investments in defence research, in the development of prototypes and in the acquisition of defence equipment and technology. This initiative consists of this Communication and a proposal for a European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP). In November 2016, the Commission released the European Defence Action Plan, in which the EDF was featured as a key element. A month later, the European Council also endorsed the initiative. In parallel, the European Commission also presented a longer-term reflection paper setting out possible scenarios for the future in the area of European defence. |
