Hundreds of Turkish government critics and opposition leaders vowed on 28 October 2015 to keep up a protest outside a Koza Ipek outlet namely Bugun TV in Istanbul. It followed the take over by the Turkish authorities of 22 companies linked to Fethullah Gülen, a US–based cleric and arch enemy of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Opponents of the AKP party accused the government of a media crackdown in the run up to general election taking place on 1 November 2015. The European Commission refused to comment on the events in Turkey. Some analysts stated that behind the silence was the need to have Turkey on board in a solution regarding the migrant crisis. Today's Zaman reported on the 30 October 2015 that at least 50 editors from the world's leading media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Agence France-Presse (AFP), had signaled alarm over the fate of Turkey's press freedom, urging the Turkish president to respect his country's independent and critical media. Media reported in November 2015 on further press crackdown with raid on well-known opposition paper, just days before a G20 meeting in Turkey and days after an EU report was published showing concerns over press freedom in the country. |
