Summary: The European Commission launched on 13 November 2017 a public consultation on fake news and online disinformation. It also set up a High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) on the same matters. Further information: The HLEG aims to gather representatives from academia, online platforms, news media and civil society organisations. It should advise the Commission on all issues arising in the context of fake information spread across traditional and social media and how to cope with its social and political consequences. The public consultation aims to help assess the effectiveness of actions by market players and other stakeholders, the need for scaling them up and introducing new actions to address different types of fake news. The consultation was scheduled to end in February 2018. |
