Further information: The Stop-TTIP Alliance, initiator of a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) against the TTIP and CETA international trade & investment agreements, announced in September 2014 its opposition to the European Commission’s decision to block the ECI. In its rejection of the ECI, the European Commission claimed that the negotiating mandates on TTIP and CETA were not legal acts but internal preparatory acts between EU institutions and therefore not contestable via an ECI. On the 10 November 2014 the Stop TTIP coalition, consisting of over 300 civil society groups from across Europe, filed a lawsuit against the European Commission at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The lawsuit related to the decision that was made by the Commission to block a ‘European Citizen’s Initiative’ (ECI) on the controversial EU-USA trade deal known as TTIP and a similar deal with Canada (CETA). |
