The European Parliament's civil liberties committee approved on 7 July 2016 amendments to a proposal from the European Commission which plans to strengthen the European Union's visa suspension mechanism.

This mechanism enables the EU to temporarily reintroduce visa requirements for third-country nationals in the event of sudden surges in irregular immigration, unfounded asylum application or a failure to cooperate with the EU on 'readmissions'.

The committee decided to widen the range of grounds upon which a visa waiver can suspended. It also approved a mandate for negotiations with the Council of the European Union on a compromise text.

The proposal was published by the Commission in May 2016 and the Council's position on the draft law was adopted shortly afterwards.
