Copies of the first issue of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to be published since a jihadist attack decimated its editorial staff on the 7 January 2015 were sold out within minutes at kiosks across France on the 14 January 2015. The special edition was published in five languages and in more than 20 countries. Controversially, it included a cartoon purporting to be Mohammed on its front cover. The newspaper normally prints 60,000 copies a week. The special edition had a print run of five million to be distributed over the following two weeks. Editor Gerard Biard said that the right to blasphemy had to be defended. 'Secularism isn't some vague concept. It's a system of values. We have to be clear that the separation of state and church is the most important principle of our republic. Without it, freedom, equality, and brotherhood are impossible'. Islamic organisations in France called on French Muslims to stay calm and to accept the publication of the magazine. Euro|Topics said in its coverage in the European press of the issue that some commentators praised the editors of Charlie Hebdo for defending freedom while sending a message of reconciliation. Others however felt the magazine again failed to show due respect. |
