Catalan premier Artur Mas met with all the pro-self-rule referendum parties on the 3 October 2014 to discuss the next step in their dispute with the Spanish government, which in late September 2014 had challenged the proposed 9 November 2014 Catalan referendum in the Spanish Constitutional Court.

One possibility discussed was to call for a general election.

On the 4 October 2014 Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called for talks with the Catalan regional authorities about the planned independence referendum.
