Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) organised a rally at Taksim Square on the 24 July 2016, protesting the failed coup attempt of the 15 July 2015. Ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) deputies and members also joined the rally, where the CHP leader said no party flags (including its own) or placards would be carried other than the Turkish flag and posters of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the republic. Hürriyet Daily News reported on the 24 July 2016 that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had invited the leaders of the ruling and two opposition parties to the Presidential Palace in Ankara on 25 July 2016 to discuss the coup attempt and measures taken against coup plotters, marking another sign for the normalisation of Turkish politics in the aftermath of the coup attempt. However, the invitation excluded Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) leader Selahattin Demirtaş, in a continued reaction against the party’s stance on the fight against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Over a million people gathered on the 7 August 2016 at a Democracy and Martyrs Rally, Yenikapı Square. It was organised as a massive joint democracy rally. Some news sources suggested over three million people attended. |
