The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) welcomed in June 2014 several new member parties that made it the European Parliament's third largest group while weakening its rivals. It was announced on the 12 June 2014 that the German eurosceptic party Alternative for Germany - AfD - had been accepted into the ECR group, alongside UK's Conservatives. On the 16 June 2014, EUObserver reported on the acceptance by the ECR group to include 2 MEPs from the eurosceptic Finns Party. The ALDE Group of Liberals was joined on the 17 June 2014 by 12 MEPs from four parties, making it the third largest group in the European Parliament with 67 seats. While initially it had been reported that the Flemish separatist party N-VA was among the group, the party later on confirmed that it had chosen to join the ECR group instead, making it the third largest political group in the European Parliament. |
