David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, rejected calls on the 2 October 2011 for an immediate return of powers from the EU to London, taking on the rightwing of his own party at the beginning of the annual Conservative party conference, 2-5 October 2011.

His comments come after the 1922 committee of Conservative backbenchersa said it would hold a debate on whether there should be a referendum on British membership of the EU, bringing Europe back to the top of the agenda for many Conservatives.

Mr Cameron's comments formed part of a concerted effort by senior Conservatives to rebuff the Eurosceptic wing of the party, which had been energised by the Eurozone crisis and which might use the House of Commons debate as a chance to defy the party leadership.
