Report of a joint letter from UK Prime Minister David Cameron and eleven other EU Prime Ministers President Van Rompuy and President Barroso in advance of the European council in March 2012. In addition, the UK Prime Minister aimed to further step up his attempt to rebuild relations in Europe during talks on the 21 February 2012 with Mariano Rajoy, the centre-right Spanish Prime Minister, seen by Downing Street as a central figure in pushing for a deeper single market and free trade. David Cameron had also travelled to Stockholm earlier in February 2012 to cement ties with liberal-minded Nordic and Baltic states. British diplomats also believed that new governments in Spain and Italy created promising relationships to the south. The letter called on the EU to stick to a liberal agenda for growth, bolder economic integration with the USA and deepening trade and investment relations with Russia, China and other strategic partners. The letter was signed by the the Prime Ministers of the Netherlands, Italy, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Ireland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Poland and the United Kingdom. |
