In August 2016 The Local.fr and other news sources reported n the situation in the migrant camp in northern France's Calais called 'The Jungle'. Security forces were reported saying that the situation was at breaking point, who feared it was a major security risk given the terrorist threat. The United Kingdom's Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, met with the Interior Minister of France, Bernard Cazeneuve in Paris on 30 August. They discussed both the situation in Calais and the fight against terrorism. Subsequently, Bernard Cazeneuve told a French regional paper that he would press ahead with the closure of the Calais migrant camp 'with the greatest determination', dismantling the site in stages while creating accommodation for thousands elsewhere in France 'to unblock Calais'. French lorry drivers, dock workers, farmers and others blockaded a highway near Calais on the 5 September 2016 demanding the closure of the camp, and threatened to blockade the port. French presidential hopeful (and ex-President) Nicolas Sarkozy said on the 5 September 2016 that if he was elected President again in 2017 he would insist that the UK renegotiate the Le Touquet Treaty 2003 so that migrants seeking asylum in the UK would kept in the UK while the application was processed. |
