The European Commission President José Manuel Barroso said on 28 May 2013 that the Commission will draft rules for shale gas production by the end of 2013 and the framework would allow 'the safe and secure extraction of shale gas in Europe.' Energy prices in Europe are more than twice the levels in the US, while concerns over costs and energy dependence are particularly pressing for eastern European countries, which are reliant on Russian energy giant Gazprom. On the 7 June 2013, EurActiv reported that German environmental experts doubt that developing shale gas is economically profitable and worthwhile for the country's energy transition. They also question the technology of fracking and call for a European Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure to be adopted. Deutsche Welle reported on the 27 June that a Polish town is against gas extraction in the region, though estimates suggest the country may be sitting on a gas supply that could cover domestic needs for the next 300 years and end the country's dependence on Russian imports. |
