The German government and the European Commission's dispute over Germany's green energy law erupted again on the 4 July 2014, with Chancellor Angela Merkel reacting angrily to suggestions from Joaquin Almunia, Europe's Competition Commissioner, that Germany had not done enough to comply with EU rules. A ruling from the European Court of Justice on the 1 July 2014 had raised hopes in Germany that its revamped renewables legislation - which aimed in part to shelter heavy industry from the cost of funding green energy - was already in line with EU law. However by the 11 July 2014 there were reports from various sources that Berlin and Brussels had settled their dispute regarding the amended Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and its compatibility with state aid guidelines. 'We now have a definitive, final agreement reached', said EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia in Brussels on the 9 July 2014. EEG passed the Bundesrat (upper house of the German Parliament) on the 11 July 2014 and was likely to come into force on the 1 August 2014. |
