A number of explosions took place at transport venues in Brussels on the morning of 22 March 2016 - this included at Zaventem, the main international airport, and on a metro train near Maelbeek Metro Station, close to the main buildings of the EU Institutions. Thirty four people were said to have died and over 200 seriously injured. Responsibility for the attacks was later claimed by 'Islamic State'. The events took place just a few days after the arrest of Salah Abdeslam in Brussels, one of the key figures behind the suicide bombings in Paris in November 2015 that killed 130 people. |
