News sources suggested that the United Kingdom might be nearer to withdrawing from the European Union following the European Council, Brussels, 26-27 June 2014 at which the UK was heavily defeated in the issue of who should be the European Commission President for the period 2014-2019. UK Prime Minister David Cameron had campaigned strongly against the nomination of former Luxembourg Prime Minister and EU insider Jean-Claude Juncker. Mr Cameron said: 'This is a bad day for Europe It risks undermining the position of national governments. It risks undermining the power of national parliaments. And it hands power to the European Parliament'. The Guardian and other news sources reported that after the decision German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised a review of nomination process for Commission President seen as a sign of sympathy for David Cameron, and Sweden's Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt also showed sympathy for flexibility in the future. Various news sources reported that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble told the Financial Times on the 29 June 2014 that Germany would do everything in its power to keep the UK in the EU. 'The UK is an essential, indispensable component of the European unity ... The EU without the UK is absolutely not acceptable, unimaginable', Mr Schäuble said. An opinion poll published by the Mail on Sunday on the 29 June 2014 showed that 47% of those polled wanted to leave the EU, while 39% wanted to remain in the EU. |
