Boost for Barroso as political support grows

José Manuel Barroso’s campaign to be reappointed European Commission president received an important boost on 10 September 2009 when leaders of three of the European Parliament’s largest political groups threw their support behind him.

Nevertheless, there was still considerable opposition to him from the Socialist Group and others, and the outcome of the vote on the 16 september 2009 was awaited with keen anticipation.
