The European Parliament's industry and energy committee approved on 21 April 2016 a non-binding resolution calling for consumers to be given more power in the energy market.

Members of the committee recommended schemes such as collective buying, home power generation by households, better price comparison tools and making it easier to switch energy providers and tariffs. They also highlighted the need for EU funds for energy efficiency related to energy poverty.

The resolution intended to be an input to specific legislation to be put forward by the European Commission under its Energy Union strategy. It was confirmed by the parliament's plenary session on 26 May.
