Portugal’s sovereign debt rating was downgraded on the 24 March 2010 in a blow to government efforts to improve the international credibility of the country’s public finances.

Fitch Ratings cut the rating on Portugal’s long-term government debt by one notch from AA to AA-minus, citing concern over the potential impact of the global crisis on economic growth and government debt.
