Article reported that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi continued to lose his grip on his own People of Liberty party on the 10 November 2011 in what were likely to be his last days in office dominated by an internal dispute over whether to push Italy into early elections or back an emergency caretaker government led by Mario Monti, former European Commissioner. There was some opposition within the Italian parliament to a government under Mr Monti but outside parliament there was broad institutional support for Mr Monti – from the powerful Catholic church, the Confindustria business association, and leading newspapers. As turmoil continued in Italian sovereign debt markets, the possibility rose again that the International Monetary Fund will be called in by any new Italian government. |
