Belgium’s political turmoil has deepened in September 2010 after three months of talks to build a governing coalition failed acrimoniously. Belgian King Albert II accepted on the 4 September 2010 that a proposed government programme put together by Elio Di Rupo – who won the June 13 elections in the Francophone south of the country – had not garnered enough support from the Dutch-speaking majority, and he accepted Mr Di Rupo’s resignation as prospective prime minister. Further negotiations also failed in early October 2010 when Flemish separatist party N-VA announced 'the end of the story' after 114 days of negotiations on state reform. |
