According to information EUObserver gathered from senior officials of Latvia's EU presidency, Belarus might come closer of a visa-free regime with the European Union if it releases political prisoners in time for an Eastern Partnership summit, taking place in May 2015.

It would be a breakthrough in EU-Belarus relations, which remain all-but frozen under the authoritarian regime of president Alexander Lukanshenko, who jailed scores of dissidents after his re-election in 2010.
