Air safety authorities were facing a mounting backlash in April 2010 as European airlines confronted by huge losses from volcanic ash flight bans started openly questioning the restrictions after successfully completing their own test flights. Some carriers warned European Commission officials in Brussels there could be airline bankruptcies following four days of bans, which were due to continue on 19 April 2010. On 19 April EU transport ministers held emergency talks by video conference on easing the air travel crisis caused by the volcanic ash cloud in Europe's skies. Reports said that the European Commission was considering a waiver of state aid rules that would allow EU Member States to funnel millions of euros in emergency funding to airlines reeling from the disruption. |
