United States news sources on the 31 May 2017 suggested that US President Donald Trump had decided to withdraw from the agreement adopted at the Paris Climate Change Conference,November-December 2015. Just days earlier at the G7 Summit in Taormina the final communiqué had indicated the lack of agreement on implementing the Paris Agreement: 'The United States of America is in the process of reviewing its policies on climate change and on the Paris Agreement and thus is not in a position to join the consensus on these topics. Understanding this process, the Heads of State and of Government of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom and the Presidents of the European Council and of the European Commission reaffirm their strong commitment to swiftly implement the Paris Agreement'. Subsequently, German Chancellor Angela Merkel had referred on the 28 May 2017 to the growing number of issues whereby the EU and the US had diverging opinions and perspectives such as climate change. On climate change she said 'The whole discussion about climate has been difficult, or rather very unsatisfactory'. President Trump formally announced his decision on the 1 June 2017. It was also reported that the EU and China discussed climate change as part of the EU-China Summit in Brussels on the 1-2 June 2017. The EU and China reaffirmed their cooperation to tackle climate change and their support to the Paris Agreement. European Council President Donald Tusk said: 'We are stepping up our cooperation on climate change with China. Which means that today, China and Europe have demonstrated solidarity with future generations and responsibility for the whole planet'. The EU and China were determined to 'lead the energy transition' toward a low-carbon economy. In a Statement the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said: 'Today is a sad day for the global community, as a key partner turns its back on the fight against climate change. The EU deeply regrets the unilateral decision by the Trump administration to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement'. |
