Austria is set to press the European Union to tighten laws covering the interception of private data following Google’s admission in May 2010 that it obtained non-encrypted information while taking photographs for its Street View service.

Josef Ostermayer, State Secretary for Media, told newspaper Der Standard on the 28 May 2010 that stronger EU data protection sanctions were necessary in order that companies were 'not even tempted' to repeat Google’s mistake.
