At least 41 people were killed and 239 others were injured when suspected Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants attacked Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport late on June 28, the Governor's office announced on June 29. It added that 10 of the victims were foreign nationals and three had dual-citizenship.At least 41 people were killed and 239 others were injured when suspected Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants attacked Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport late on the 28 June 2016. The attack was a further act of terrorism in a series of suicide bombings and attacks in Turkey over the previous year. Turkey was part of the US-led coalition against Islamic State and was also trying to contain the spillover from neighbouring Syria’s civil war, including hosting very large number of Syrian refugees. Turkey was also battling an insurgency by Kurdish militants, which had also allegedly included carrying out terrorist attacks. |
