An earthquake with the magnitude of 6.2 struck in central Italy in the early hours of the 24 August 2016, in a remote area across Umbria, Lazio and Le Marche. The Local.it and other news sources reported on the incident and its aftermath and suggested that at least 250 people had been killed and many more injured. The area of the earthquake was just north of the city of L'Aquila, where a quake claimed the lives of some 300 people in 2009. In a statement expressing sympathy the European Commission reported that its Emergency Response Coordination Centre was closely monitoring the situation and was in contact with the Italian civil protection authorities regarding any help which could be requested. |
