The European Parliament held a debate to mark the centenary of the Armenian Genocide on the 15 April 2015. The debate touched on EU relations with Turkey and attempts to renew Turkish - Armenian diplomatic relations. Armenia and Turkey should use the centenary of the Armenian genocide to renew diplomatic relations, open the border and pave the way for economic integration, said the European Parliament Resolution adopted after the debate. MEPs stressed the need for Turkey to recognise the Armenian genocide, so as to pave way for 'genuine reconciliation'. MEPs also commended the statement by Pope Francis on 12 April 2015 honouring the centenary of the genocide. |
