The President of the European Commission announced on 6 May 2016 his decision to appoint Mr Ján Figeľ as the first Special Envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion or belief outside the European Union.

The European Parliament supported this initiative in its Resolution of 4 February 2016. As part of his mission, Mr Figeľ was scheduled to present a report in the context of the Commission's dialogue with churches and religious associations or communities.

It was announced in April 2017 that Mr Figeľ had been reappointed for another 12 months mandate as Special Envoy.
