On the 22-23 April 2017 AfD met in Cologne at their party conference. There was extremely tight security as thousands protesting against the AfD and its anti-immigration, anti-Muslim and Eurosceptical message came to the city. The divisions within the AfD as to its future strategy dominated much of the conference. Delegates took a clear majority decision not to debate the strategy of Frauke Petry as it attempted to adopt its party manifesto for the federal election. On the 23 April 2017 the delegates selected the right-wing nationalist Alexander Gauland and the more liberal Alice Weidel as its top candidates for the September 2017 federal election. The manifesto it adopted focused on stopping 'unrestrained mass immigration'. It also called for Germany's departure from the eurozone and reintroduction of a new national currency. |
