Russia's Central Electoral Commission formally barred Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on the 23 June 2017 from taking part in the country's 2018 Presidential Election.

The Commission said he could not stand because he had earlier been found guilty at a February 2017 retrial of embezzlement and given a suspended sentence. Navalny called the trial 'politically motivated'. The verdict in an original trial had been quashed by the European Court of Human rights in 2016.
