Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Environment, spoke at the launch of the European Environment Agency's Report on Air Quality 2013 in Brussels on the 15 October 2013, referring the importance of the environment in the current context of economic challenges.

More than 90% of Europeans living in cities are exposed to unsafe levels one of the most health damaging air pollutants, with Bulgaria having the dirtiest air among EU countries, according to this study.
