Background and further information: The Council concluded that the 2018 budget should be mainly about growth, jobs, security and handling migration, while keeping enough financial leeway to respond to unforeseen needs. Simultaneously, it also approved two proposal for amendments regarding the annual budget for 2017, regarding support to youth unemployment and to the Italian regions affected by a series of earthquakes in 2016. The draft annual budget was put forward by the European Commission in May 2017. The European Parliament set out its position on 5 July. The Council of the European Union adopted on 4 September 2017 its position regarding the draft annual budget for the European Union in 2018. |
