Further information: The Council recalled previous conclusions it adopted on the situation in Venezuela, urging for a negotiated solution that could solve the political crisis to be found. It called for full electoral transparency, warning against further social polarisation. Given the deteriorating situation in the country, the Council agreed to adopt an embargo on arms and on related material that might be used for internal repression, as well as a legal framework for a travel ban and assets freeze. It also warned that these measures could be expanded or removed, depending on the evolution of the situation in Venezuela. These decisions were formally made at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council. The Council of the European Union adopted on 13 November 2017 a set of conclusions and agreed on targeted sanctions against Venezuela, in view of its concerns at the situation in the country. |
