Summary: The 44th G7 summit was held on 8–9 June 2018, in Charlevoix (Canada). The summit received much attention due to a significant decline of relations of members with the United States. Further information: The Canadian Prime Minister unveiled in the run-up to the Summit that his priorities would be to discuss topics like gender equality, diversity and inclusion, climate change and the strengthening of the middle class. The Summit was overshadowed by increasing tension between US President and the remaining members of the G7 Group, and with Canada in particular. A public war of words took place between leaders of different countries, adding to the deteriorating relations between the United States and many within the Western world. At the meeting, the United States also called for Russia to be reinstated as a member, following its exclusion in 2014. Italy seconded the call shortly after. |
