News sources reported on the 2 January 2017 that so-called Islamic State (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack. Turkish police released the first footage of the Reina attacker on the same day. Initial police reports suggested that the attacker might have been from Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan. EU, national and other world leaders expressed solidarity with Turkey. Turkish sources reported on the 17 January 2017 that the suspected attacker, Abdulkadir Masharipov, an Uzbek Islamic State Iraq and Levant (ISIL) militant, had been detained in the Esenyurt district of Istanbul. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş had said a day earlier that evidence showed that the 1 January attack had been carried out professionally with the involvement of an intelligence organisation. |
